ccpkg

Open packaging format for AI coding assistant extensions -- one archive installs skills, agents, MCP servers, and hooks across any compatible tool.

Install / Use

claude mcp add zircote-plugins -- npx -y github:zircote-plugins/ccpkg

If the server publishes to npm under a different name, use that package instead — check the repo README.

Our assessment of ccpkg

ccpkg scores 79/100 on our quality scale, 3635th of 4,662 Development & Engineering skills we index.

Its MCP Server is 6.9 KB long, well organised into 12 sections with 3 code examples: a thorough specification that gives an agent plenty to work with.

It has 3 GitHub stars, so there is little community track record yet; judge it on its content.

Maintenance, license and trust

  • The repository was last updated 26 days ago, so ccpkg is actively maintained.
  • Our last check on 2026-09-14 found the source still online.
  • No license is declared. By default that means all rights are reserved: you can read it, but reusing or redistributing it is not clearly permitted. Ask the author before building on it commercially.
  • Its trust signals score 80/100, with 2 cautions from licensing, adoption, age or documentation. These come from repository metadata, not a code audit — read the skill file before letting an agent act on it.

Safety scan

No issues found

Our scan of the whole file found no instruction hijacking, hidden characters, credential access, data exfiltration or destructive commands. An AI review of the same text found nothing harmful.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install ccpkg?
Run claude mcp add zircote-plugins -- npx -y github:zircote-plugins/ccpkg. The install tabs above show the steps for each supported agent.
Which AI agents does ccpkg work with?
It is written for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenAI Codex, as a MCP Server file. Other agents that read the same format can often use it too.
Is ccpkg safe to use?
Our scan of the whole file found no instruction hijacking, hidden characters, credential access, data exfiltration or destructive commands. An AI review of the same text found nothing harmful. It declares no license and scores 80/100 on trust signals. Skills are instructions an agent will follow, so read the file before installing it and do not approve commands you do not understand.
Is ccpkg still maintained?
The repository was last updated 26 days ago, so ccpkg is actively maintained.

An open packaging format for AI coding assistant extensions.

ccpkg is a self-contained archive format for packaging and distributing skills, agents, commands, hooks, MCP servers, and LSP servers as a single portable unit. One file, one install, zero post-install steps.

<picture> <source media="(prefers-color-scheme: dark)" srcset=".github/readme-infographic.svg"> <img alt="How ccpkg works: Author, Pack, Distribute, Install" src=".github/readme-infographic.svg" width="800"> </picture>

The Problem

AI coding assistants are increasingly extensible, but sharing extensions is fragmented:

  • Brittleness -- Extensions installed from Git repos break silently when authors push changes. No version pinning, no integrity verification, no dependency vendoring.
  • Slow startup -- Every session start fetches plugin state from remote repos. Multiple plugins mean minutes of latency before the assistant is ready.
  • No trust signals -- Finding good extensions means word-of-mouth. No curation, no verification, no structured metadata to filter by.
  • Configuration burden -- MCP server configs end up buried in plugin cache directories. Secrets, env vars, and auth tokens require editing opaque files.

The Solution

A .ccpkg file is a standard ZIP archive containing a declarative manifest.json and all extension components. Install is deterministic: extract, configure, register. No post-install scripts, no network fetches, no build steps.

Key Features

  • Self-contained archives -- All dependencies vendored inside. No runtime network fetches.
  • Cross-tool portability -- Works across Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Codex, Copilot, and other compatible tools. Built on universal standards (MCP, LSP, Agent Skills).
  • Lazy loading -- Only metadata loaded at startup. Full content loaded on demand. Twenty installed packages have the same startup time as zero.
  • Typed configuration -- Manifest declares config slots (secrets, strings, enums, paths). Users configure once at install time. Templates wire values into MCP/LSP configs automatically.
  • Deterministic lockfiles -- ccpkg-lock.json pins exact versions with checksums. Commit it to share identical environments across a team.
  • Decentralized registries -- No central authority required. Registries are JSON files hostable on GitHub Pages, S3, or any static server.
  • Install scope control -- User flag always wins. Install globally (~/.claude/packages/) or per-project (<project>/.claude/packages/).
  • Dev mode -- Symlink local directories for live development without re-packing.
