README

evDash

evDash is an open-source EV dashboard for M5Stack devices. It reads live vehicle data from CAN/OBD2, shows real-time screens on a 320x240 touch display, and can log or upload telemetry over WiFi.

Use this firmware at your own risk.

What evDash does

  • live EV telemetry on multiple screens (tiles, speed, cells, charging graph, debug, HUD)
  • touch-first UI with menu paging, drag scrolling, and on-screen keyboard
  • communication via CAN (MCP2515/COMMU) or OBD2 BLE4
  • OBD2 WiFi adapter mode (marked as DEV)
  • SD card logging and optional remote uploads (ABRP, MQTT, contribute)

Supported hardware

Recommended configuration

  • M5Stack CoreS3 SE (K128-SE)
  • SD card 2-32 MB
  • GPS M003-V2.1 module
  • OBDLink CX BLE4 adapter

Main boards

  • Preferred: M5Stack CoreS3 SE (K128-SE)
  • Preferred: M5Stack CoreS3
  • M5Stack Core2 v1.1
  • M5Stack Core2 v1.0

Vehicle interface

  • Preferred: CAN via COMMU / MCP2515
  • Preferred: OBD2 BLE4 adapter (OBDLink CX BLE4 recommended)
  • in DEV OBD2 Bluetooth3 classic adapter (BT3, only Core2 devices with Classic BT support)
  • in DEV OBD2 WiFi adapter

GPS modules

  • Preferred: GPS module v2.1 with SMA antenna (AT6668) for M5Core / M5Stack M003-V2.1
  • M5 GNSS (NEO-M9N, typically 38400 bps)
  • M5 GPS (NEO-M8N, typically 9600 bps)

Supported vehicles

This project is for battery EVs and EV/PHEV models with implemented decoders.

Fully supported:

  • Hyundai Ioniq 5/6 (eGMP)
  • Kia EV6 (eGMP)

Community/ongoing support:

  • Kia e-Niro, e-Soul, EV9
  • Hyundai Kona EV, Ioniq, Ioniq PHEV
  • Renault Zoe
  • BMW i3
  • Peugeot e-208
  • VW ID.3 / ID.4
  • Audi Q4
  • Skoda Enyaq

Support level varies by model year and ECU behavior. See RELEASENOTES.md for the latest parser and feature updates.

Quick install (binary)

Use the evDash Web Flasher: https://www.evdash.eu/m5flash or follow INSTALLATION.md.

Contribute data

Contribute data is primarily for secure access to your own vehicle history (not a dev-team telemetry feed).

  • Default state is ON.
  • If you do not want remote history at all, disable it in Others -> Remote upload -> Contribute data -> OFF.
  • While driving, older SD v2 logs are uploaded quietly in background (starts after about 5 minutes once internet is available).
  • This backfills gaps when live upload was temporarily unavailable.
  • Successful upload renames _v2.json to _v2_uploaded.json; failed uploads stay unchanged for retry.

Typical benefits:

  • trip history and route timeline
  • charging behavior comparison over time
  • battery/cell trend tracking and degradation diagnostics
  • optional sharing of live position or a selected trip via view token

Security notes:

  • transport is over HTTPS and tied to device authentication (hwDeviceId + token)
  • backend is hosted on private infrastructure at Slovak Telekom
  • operational access is restricted to a single maintainer

If you want stricter privacy controls (for example auto-delete horizon, route location aging, home/work/cabin anonymization), these can be added.

UI controls

Touch zones (normal screens)

  • left third: previous screen
  • right third: next screen
  • center third: open menu

  • top-right 64x64: page up
  • bottom-right 64x64: page down
  • rest of area: select item
  • drag: smooth vertical menu scroll

Touch Zones

Screens

  • blank (LCD off)
  • auto mode
  • tiles/basic summary
  • speed + driving/charging indicators
  • battery cell voltages and temperatures

CoreS3 vs Core2 variants

All supported boards run evDash, but practical behavior differs:

| Topic | CoreS3 / CoreS3 SE | Core2 v1.0 | Core2 v1.1 | |---|---|---|---| | Firmware target | m5stack-cores3 | m5stack-core2-v1_0 | m5stack-core2-v1_1 | | UI responsiveness | Best | Good | Good | | OBD BLE4 | Yes | Yes | Yes | | CAN COMMU | No | Yes | Yes | | CPU + speed | ESP32-S3, up to 240 MHz | ESP32, up to 240 MHz | ESP32, up to 240 MHz | | PMIC | AXP2101 | AXP192 | AXP2101 | | RTC backup battery | No | No | Yes |

CoreS3 is usually the best overall choice for daily use and UI performance. Core2 v1.1 is usually better than Core2 v1.0 for long-running logging and stable timekeeping.

No longer supported

  • M5Stack Core1
  • LILYGO TTGO T4 v1.3
  • SIM800L GPRS module
