Motivation
-
Lack of access to legal resources: It's hard to know which lawyers, firms or organizations can offer representation to individuals with varying statuses (e.g., refugees, green card holders, permanent residents, undocumented and work visa immigrants). Furthermore, it's difficult to know who can do pro bono (no fee or substantially reduced fee) work for those who are financially restricted.
-
Lack of visibility around immigration prejudice: Despite social media, a lot of airport/immigration prejudice around Muslims has gone unnoticed and unproven for the last 16+ years. There isn't a single forum where you can pledge information about where you were, what you were doing, etc. to demonstrate, in aggregate, a trend that could provide precise information and context for the international human rights community to respond to.
Vision
Build a two-sided marketplace for lawyers and those seeking legal help to easily sign-up and find the resources most relevant to them.
-
Connect people to legal aid. Create a tool that connects individuals with legal help (lawyers and/or informative resources) based on their immigration status.
-
Build a record of discriminatory data. Allow individuals experiencing prejudice to document and report their experiences with nuance (where you were, what was said to you, which flight were you boarding or arriving from, who were you with, what forms they made you fill out, where were you traveling to and from, etc.). While this may not motivate immediate action, building a record of experiences is important in paring out what exactly is going on. Entry into the country is often left to the call of the customs officer at the border. Gathering records may have potential to motivate a more precise understanding and practice of immigration law.
